Moving to Denmark. Immigration Journey.

Meet the Founder

Hi! I’m Zoe Ko - Founder of Clever Immigrant

More than sixteen years ago, I arrived in Denmark as an international student. I didn’t speak Danish, I didn’t have a job, and I knew very little about how the Danish system worked.

I had a lot to figure out...

My journey abroad had actually started a little earlier in Alaska, USA, where I spent two adventurous summers on a Work and Travel programme. Those experiences gave me the confidence to imagine building a life somewhere new.

At first, I hoped to stay and study in the United States, but the cost of higher education made that impossible. Back home, I discovered that, as an EU citizen, I could study an international degree taught in English in Denmark without paying tuition fees.

That opportunity changed the direction of my life.

So, in 2009, I packed my suitcase and moved to Denmark.

Over the years, I built my life here one step at a time. I completed my university education, learned Danish, found my first jobs, became a parent, started businesses, and gradually found my place in Danish society.

But especially in those first years, there was a lot of trial and error.

I spent countless hours searching for answers, translating Danish websites, trying to understand official letters, and simply learning as I went. Back in 2009, reliable information in English was much more limited than it is today.

I often wished there had been one place that explained not only what I needed to do, but why it mattered and how things actually worked.

As the years passed, classmates, colleagues, and other internationals started coming to me with their own questions - about studying, finding work, student housing, SU, family life, and navigating the Danish system.

I was always happy to help because I remembered exactly what it felt like to be new here.

And eventually, I realised something.

The problem isn’t that Denmark lacks information.

Quite the opposite. There is a huge amount of reliable official information, but it is spread across many different websites and can be difficult to connect into one clear picture when you are new to the country.

That’s why I created Clever Immigrant.

Clever Immigrant doesn’t replace Danish authorities or official government websites. It brings trusted official information together with the kind of practical, real-life experience that you usually gain only after living here for a while.

If my experience can save you some time, answer a few of those questions I once had myself, and help you feel more confident about building your life in Denmark, then Clever Immigrant is doing exactly what I created it to do.

Welcome - and thank you for letting me be a small part of your journey.

About Me

I’m a writer, educator, entrepreneur, and the founder of Clever Immigrant.

For more than sixteen years, Denmark has been my home. It’s where I completed my education, built my family life, started businesses, and learned - sometimes through trial and error - how life in Denmark actually works.

I’m also the author of Living in Denmark - Study, Work & Settle and the founder of Books for Dreamers, where I create children’s books, novels, and practical guides for curious minds of different ages.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Studies & Communication from Roskilde University, and much of my work today brings together two things: personal experience and carefully researched information from trusted official sources.

I enjoy taking information that can feel complicated or overwhelming and making it clearer, simpler, and easier to use in real life.

Whether I’m writing a book, creating an educational resource, or developing something new through Clever Immigrant, the idea behind my work is quite simple:

To make useful knowledge easier to understand - and to encourage people to learn, grow, and explore.
